Table of Contents
I have been a TrustedHousesitters member since 2018. In that time I have completed more than 30+ sits through the platform across 15+ countries, maintained a 100% five-star review record, and been featured in TrustedHousesitters' own marketing content, including a video filmed during an active sit in Montenegro.
This is not a review written from a few weeks of browsing the platform. It is written from years of real use, hundreds of applications, and sits ranging from long weekends to months-long assignments.
My goal here is to give you an honest TrustedHousesitters Review: the strengths, the real limitations, and whether TrustedHousesitters is actually worth the membership fee in 2026.
What is TrustedHousesitters?
TrustedHousesitters is the largest house sitting platform in the world. It connects homeowners who need someone to look after their home and pets with sitters who want free accommodation in exchange for that care.
The model is simple: no money changes hands between homeowner and sitter. The homeowner gets free pet care and home oversight. The sitter gets free accommodation. Both pay a separate annual membership fee to access the platform.
Founded in 2010, TrustedHousesitters now has listings in 140+ countries and is by a significant margin the most active platform in the house sitting space. If you are serious about house sitting as a travel strategy, this is almost certainly where you will spend most of your time.
TrustedHousesitters Membership Cost and Plans
TrustedHousesitters offers separate memberships for sitters and pet parents (homeowners), plus combined options. Here is the current pricing breakdown:
| Membership Tier | Money Back Promise | Annual Cost | Cost Per Sit | What's Included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Sitter | Yes | $129/year | $12/sit | Unlimited sit access |
| Standard Sitter | Yes | $169/year | $12/sit | Unlimited sits, instant alerts, vet video calls, member support, accident & liability plan |
| Premium Sitter | Yes | $259/year | No Booking Fees | Everything in Standard + sit cancellation plan, 2 airport lounge passes, premium profile badge |
| Basic Pet Parent | No | $149/year | $12/sit | Unlimited pet and home care access |
| Standard Pet Parent | Yes | $229/year | $12/sit | Basic features + vet calls anytime, listing boost, see who saves your listing |
| Premium Pet Parent | Yes | $299/year | No Booking Fees | Everything in Standard + sit cancellation plan, 2 airport lounge passes, premium profile badge |
| Basic Combined | Yes (just for sitter) | $209/year | $12/sit | Unlimited sits + unlimited pet and home care |
| Standard Combined | Yes | $309/year | $12/sit | All Standard features for both sitter and pet parent |
| Premium Combined | Yes | $399/year | No Booking Fees | All Premium features for both sitter and pet parent |
Prices shown in USD and vary by region. All plans (except Basic Pet Parent) include a money back promise.
My recommendation: The Standard Sitter plan is the sweet spot for most active sitters. You get the vet helpline, instant alerts, and the accident and liability plan, and the $12 per sit booking fee is worth paying at this stage while you build your review record. Once you are doing multiple sits per month, run the numbers on Premium, at $259/year with no booking fees, it pays for itself quickly if you are sitting regularly.
TrustedHousesitters now offers a Money Back Promise on all plans, except for the Basic Pet Parent.
Basic and Standard Plans Now Include a Per-Sit Booking Fee
A notable change from previous years: the Basic and Standard sitter plans now include a $12 booking fee per confirmed sit. Only the Premium plans (sitter at $259/year, pet parent at $299/year and combined at $399/year) waive this fee entirely. For sitters doing one or two sits a year the fee is negligible, but for active sitters doing ten or more sits annually the Premium plan becomes the more economical choice. It is worth doing the math before choosing your tier.
Realistically, even with the $12 per sit fee, most sitters will recover the cost of membership with a single stay. Anything beyond that is effectively free accommodation.
A few things worth knowing about the cost:
- Per-sit fees of $12/sit for all non Premium accounts. Once you have a membership, you can apply to unlimited sits anywhere in the world for the full year. If you do even one sit that would otherwise cost $1,000+ in accommodation, the membership pays for itself immediately.
- Discount codes are widely available. TrustedHousesitters regularly offers 25% off for new members. Search for current discount codes before joining. I have seen them consistently available at that rate.
- The cost has increased over the years. When I joined in 2018 the membership was significantly cheaper and the tiers didn't exist, it was one membership for sitters and one for pet parents. It is still excellent value for active sitters, but worth noting if you are comparing year-over-year.
What You Get as a TrustedHousesitters Member
Money Back Promise
- Sitters: If you do not confirm any sits within 14 days of making your 5th application as a sitter, you’ll receive your money back with no strings attached.
- Pet Parents (except Basic Pet Parent): If you do not receive any sitter applications within 14 days of posting your first owner listing, you can also claim your money back with no strings attached.
- Basic Combined: The money back promise only addresses applying to sits.
Access to 140+ Countries
The listing volume on TrustedHousesitters is genuinely unmatched. At any given time there are thousands of active listings across Europe, North America, Oceania, Asia, and increasingly South America and Africa.
This matters practically: if you want to house sit in a specific country or region, TrustedHousesitters almost always has listings there. Smaller platforms often have limited or no listings in the locations you want.
Verified Profiles and Background Checks
TrustedHousesitters requires ID verification from both sitters and pet parents. Sitters can also complete a background check which shows on their profile and is worth doing as it is a visible trust signal to pet parents reviewing your application.
The verification system is one of the reasons TrustedHousesitters attracts homeowners with higher-value properties and more trusting arrangements than some smaller platforms.
Two-Way Review System
After each sit, both the pet parent and sitter leave a review. This creates a reputation system that benefits experienced sitters significantly over time.
My 100% five-star review record across 30+ sits is visible on my profile and it is a meaningful competitive advantage. Building that record takes time, but the platform rewards it with better access to quality sits.
The TrustedHousesitters App
The app is genuinely good and is how most active sitters manage their applications. You can set up alerts for specific locations, respond to messages quickly, and browse new listings as soon as they go live. Given that popular listings close after five applications, the app alerts are not optional, they are how you stay competitive.
Vet Helpline and Insurance
Standard and Premium members get access to a 24/7 vet helpline. I have used this during sits and it is a real service with real veterinary professionals. For anyone sitting with older animals or pets with health conditions, it provides genuine peace of mind.
The insurance included varies by plan. Read the terms carefully if coverage is important to your decision.
The Real Pros of TrustedHousesitters
The Largest and Most Active Community
No other platform comes close for listing volume. This is the single biggest reason to join TrustedHousesitters. More listings means more choice, more flexibility, and more opportunities to find sits that actually match your schedule and location preferences.
International Reach is Unmatched
For international sitting specifically, TrustedHousesitters is in a league of its own. I have used it for sits in New Zealand, Iceland, Scotland, France, Hawaii, Montenegro, and across Europe. Many of these destinations had zero or minimal listings on any other platform.
Strong Pet Parent Trust
Because of the verification system and the platform's reputation, TrustedHousesitters attracts homeowners who take the process seriously. The sits tend to be well-organized, the homeowners communicative, and the properties well-maintained. In my experience, the average TrustedHousesitters homeowner is more prepared and more professional than on smaller platforms.
Review Profile Compounds Over Time
The longer you are on TrustedHousesitters, the more valuable your membership becomes. A profile with 30+ five-star reviews opens doors that simply are not available to new sitters. Once you have that record it becomes one of your most valuable assets as a traveler.
Certified B Corporation
TrustedHousesitters is also a certified B Corporation, meaning they meet verified standards of social and environmental performance. For a platform built entirely on trust between strangers, that certification is a meaningful signal about how seriously they take their community obligations.
Featured in Official Marketing
TrustedHousesitters invited me to be part of their official marketing content, a video filmed during an active sit in Montenegro. That level of engagement with the community is something I have not seen from any other house sitting platform.
The Real Cons of TrustedHousesitters
This is the section most reviews skip. I am not going to.
The 5-Application Limit
This is the most significant operational change TrustedHousesitters has made in recent years and it affects sitters more than anything else on the platform.
Listings now close after receiving five applications. Once five sitters have applied, no one else can apply until the pet parent either declines applicants or the listing reopens.
What this means in practice: popular sits in desirable locations fill up extremely fast, often within hours of being listed. If you are not checking the app regularly and applying quickly, you will miss a significant portion of available listings.
The workaround is the alert system, to set up alerts for your target locations and apply immediately when a matching listing goes live. But it requires active engagement with the platform rather than casual browsing.
Even with alerts enabled, the time zone problem is real. If you are based in the United States and targeting sits in New Zealand, the UK, or Europe, new listings will often go live in the middle of your night. By the time the alert wakes your phone and you actually see it, all five application slots are already filled. This makes chasing specific destination sits genuinely difficult depending on where you are in the world, and it is worth being realistic about before you commit to a membership.
Increasing Competition
House sitting has grown substantially in popularity over the past few years. TrustedHousesitters has grown with it. The most desirable sits, long-term assignments in places like New Zealand, Hawaii, or major European cities are significantly more competitive than they were when I started in 2018.
This is not a reason not to join. It is a reason to invest time in building a strong profile before you start applying, and to target less competitive sits early on while you build your review record.
Cost Has Increased
The membership fee has risen meaningfully since TrustedHousesitters launched. At $129-$399 per year depending on plan, it is still excellent value for active sitters, but it is worth acknowledging that it is no longer the affordable entry point it once was.
Not Ideal for Very Short-Term Sits
TrustedHousesitters is best suited for sits of a week or more. Pet Parents paying a premium membership are generally looking for substantial coverage and a weekend sit is relatively rare on the platform compared to others like Rover (read full review) where short-term care is more common. The $12 per sit booking fee makes this even less practical for short weekend assignments.
If you’re deciding between platforms, don’t guess, here’s a full side-by-side comparison.
My Personal Experience With TrustedHousesitters

I joined TrustedHousesitters in April 2018 with my first sit being a cat named Hooch in Salt Lake City with a very firm 5am breakfast rule.
That first sit turned into a lifestyle. Over the following years I completed 50+ different sits (and many repeat sits) through TrustedHousesitters and other platforms, across more than 20 countries. The sits have ranged from two-day weekend assignments to months-long stays. I have cared for dogs, cats, farm animals, exotic pets, and everything in between.
A few sits stand out as examples of what TrustedHousesitters genuinely makes possible:
- Iceland over Christmas – six weeks managing a home and 2 cats through the darkest, coldest days of the year. An experience I would never have had as a regular tourist. New Year's in Iceland is an experience all of its own and being in a comfortable house made it that much better.
- Off-grid Hawaii – a remote property on the Big Island six months after the volcano stopped erupting. A completely unique and unforgettable assignment, not to mention life-long friends.
- Scottish highlands – six weeks with two very energetic spaniels who were genuinely among the most memorable animal friends I have ever had the pleasure of caring for.
None of these sits would have happened without TrustedHousesitters. The platform has quite literally shaped the last eight years of my life.
Is TrustedHousesitters Worth It in 2026?
For most people who are genuinely committed to house sitting as a travel strategy, yes. Clearly and confidently yes.
If you plan to do even one or two house sits per year, the membership almost always pays for itself, and beyond that, it becomes one of the cheapest ways to travel long-term. The listing volume is unmatched. The community is the most active in the space. And the review profile you build over time compounds into a genuine long-term asset.
The caveats are real: the 5-application limit requires active engagement, competition has increased, and the cost has risen. None of these change the fundamental value proposition.
✅ The Pros
- Largest listing volume worldwide
- 140+ countries
- Strong verification and trust systems
- Two-way review system compounds over time
- App with real-time alerts
- 24/7 vet helpline (Standard+)
- Largest and most active community
❌ The Cons
- 5-application limit requires fast action
- Increased competition on popular sits
- $12/sit fee unless on a Premium membership
- Higher membership cost than some platforms
- Less suited to very short sits
- Price has increased significantly since launch
Who Should Join TrustedHouseSitters
It is the best fit for:
- Anyone serious about house sitting as a travel strategy. If free accommodation is a genuine goal rather than a vague curiosity, TrustedHouseSitters is where you build a real track record. The listing volume and the compounding review profile make it the platform that rewards commitment more than any other.
- Sitters targeting international destinations. No other platform comes close for global reach. If your list includes New Zealand, Iceland, Hawaii, France, Portugal, or anywhere else in the world, TrustedHouseSitters almost certainly has listings there.
- Remote workers and location-independent travelers. The longer-term sits on TrustedHouseSitters pair naturally with remote work schedules. Month-long assignments in a fully equipped home are far more common here than on any other platform.
- Sitters planning multiple sits per year. The economics improve quickly with volume. Two or three sits a year in cities where accommodation costs $150–$250/night and the membership has paid for itself ten times over.
- Couples and families. TrustedHouseSitters allows combined profiles, meaning couples can apply together and split the cost of a single membership. This makes it one of the better-value options for two people traveling and sitting together.
Who it’s not ideal for:
- Complete beginners who want lower competition for a first sit. The five-application limit and the number of experienced sitters competing for popular listings can make the first sit feel frustratingly out of reach. HouseCarers (read full review) is worth considering as a lower-competition first platform, then expanding to TrustedHouseSitters once you have a couple of reviews.
- Sitters on a very tight budget who want the cheapest possible entry point. MindMyHouse (read full review) at $29/year is the most affordable platform in house sitting and a legitimate place to start.
- Sitters focused exclusively on paid pet care. Rover is built for exactly this and handles it better than any free accommodation platform.
For most people, this is still the best first platform to join, just go in with realistic expectations about competition and effort required.
If you are:
- Serious about house sitting long-term → choose TrustedHousesitters
- Looking to travel internationally → choose TrustedHousesitters
- Sitting in France specifically → sign up with Nomador (read full review)
- A beginner wanting easy first sits → start with HouseCarers instead
- Wanting both travel + income → use TrustedHousesitters + Rover
How to Get Started on TrustedHousesitters
If you have decided TrustedHousesitters is the right platform, here is the fastest path to your first sit:
- Join and complete your profile fully before applying anywhere. A half-finished profile gets ignored. Read my full guide to writing a house sitting profile that gets responses before you start.
- Complete ID verification immediately. It shows on your profile as a trust badge and pet parents notice it.
- Get references loaded before applying. Even two or three external references gives your profile credibility before you have any sitting reviews.
- Set up location alerts. In the TrustedHousesitters app, set alerts for your target destinations. Apply within the first few hours of a listing going live.
- Start with local or less competitive sits. Your first sit does not need to be in Paris or New Zealand. A local sit gets you a verified review that dramatically improves your chances for everything that follows.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does TrustedHousesitters cost?
TrustedHousesitters sitter memberships start at $129/year for the Basic plan and go up to $259/year for the Premium plan. Pet Parent (Homeowner) memberships start at $149/year for the Basic plan and go up to $299/year for the Premium Plan. Combined memberships start at $209/year and go up to $399/year for Premium. New members can sometimes find 25% discount codes which bring the entry price down to around $97/year.
Is TrustedHousesitters free?
No. Both sitters and pet parents pay an annual membership fee. However, no money changes hands between the sitter and homeowner and the accommodation is free in exchange for pet care. The only cost to sitters is the annual membership.
How competitive is TrustedHousesitters?
Competition varies significantly by location and time of year. Popular destinations like London, Paris, New York, and major cities in New Zealand and Australia are highly competitive. Rural locations, less-visited countries, and off-season listings are much more accessible for newer sitters. The 5-application limit means the most desirable sits fill quickly, often within hours.
How many sits can I do with one TrustedHousesitters membership?
Unlimited. Once you have an active membership, you can apply to and accept as many sits as you want during the year. There is a $12 per sit booking fee on Basic and Standard plans. Premium members pay no booking fee. A single successful sit in a city like London or Sydney could save far more than the cost of the annual membership.
What is the TrustedHousesitters cancellation policy?
TrustedHousesitters memberships are annual. Cancellations are handled according to their terms of service which are available on their website. Check the current terms directly on the TrustedHousesitters site as policies can change.
Is TrustedHousesitters safe?
TrustedHousesitters requires ID verification and optional background checks for sitters. The two-way review system creates accountability on both sides. The platform also has a 24/7 vet helpline for Standard and Premium members. As with any platform involving strangers, it is important to do your own due diligence, read reviews carefully, do a video call before confirming, and trust your instincts if something feels off.
What is the best TrustedHousesitters alternative?
For beginners wanting lower competition, HouseCarers is the best alternative. For European sits specifically, Nomador is worth considering. Sitters looking for a more personal, support-focused platform (HouseSit Match (read full review) is worth considering, especially in the UK and Europe). For paid pet care rather than free accommodation, Rover is the right platform. For a full comparison, read my house sitting platforms guide.
Does TrustedHousesitters have any booking fees?
Yes. TrustedHousesitters recently introduced a $12 per sit booking fee for Basic and Standard members. Premium tier members on all plan types pay no booking fee.
TrustedHousesitters is the platform that made this lifestyle possible for me. Eight years, 30+ sits, 15+ countries. The membership has paid for itself hundreds of times over.
